Twenty Eight Cafe

Hello there, lovelies!

We’re back today with a review on Twenty Eight Café, which is named after its shophouse location at 28 Wilkie Road, just behind Wilkie Edge mall.

In the midst of a mid-week existential crisis, Rose and I decided to visit this café for lunch, because we needed some good food to boost our productivity at work. And let us just say, the café does not disappoint.

When we entered the café, the first thing we saw was the wide array of bread on display. They looked so yummy. The exterior of the café is also radically different from its interior – the exterior has a European vibe, while the interior follows the minimalistic industrial theme. The space is huge and can accommodate up to 60 diners – you can either choose to sit at the communal high table (but hey, community cases are increasing, so perhaps not) or a separate wooden table.

As per COVID-19 norms, Rose and I did the safe entry check in and scanned the QR code for the menu. Rose decided to order the Steak & Egg and Earl Grey Strawberry whereas I ordered the Mentaiko Benedict and Cappuccino.

The drinks arrived first, and we took a sip of the Earl Grey Strawberry. And honestly, this drink was the most disappointing of everything that came. “I paid $6.50 for iced water,” Rose deadpanned. The tea wasn’t steeped enough for the full aroma of the tea to be out, and the strawberry just made it slightly sourish. You know those on-tap lemon waters? This tasted like that.

The cup of cappuccino, on the other hand, was aesthetically pleasing and aromatic. They added the little heart design at the top as well, which was adorable. On the first sip, you can taste the creamy taste of milk and the subtle coffee flavour (to be honest it tastes more like latte than cappuccino to me). This drink is perfect for rainy weather.

This Steak & Egg is some real hearty goodness – it comprises of 150 grams piece of juicy rib-eye, wilted spinach, poached egg with hollandaise sauce, grilled potatoes, and a grilled tomato. Because of my religious belief, I couldn’t eat the beef. However, I took a little of the sides from Rose and honestly, I couldn’t stop myself from taking more of the potatoes cause it’s so perfectly grilled. Thankfully, she’s a small eater, so she kept lobbing the potatoes at me because she couldn’t finish them. According to Rose, the beef was grilled exactly till what she wanted – a perfect medium rare.

Covered under the umami rich Mentaiko hollandaise lies two poached eggs and some lightly seasoned asparagus. Cutting into the yolk, I was disappointed that it wasn’t as runny as I expected it to be. Okay, I don’t usually eat asparagus, but the ones here was really good. Rose kept snitching some of it as well. The combination of smoked salmon and the lightly toasted brioche made up for the lack of runny yolk, and there was a pleasant contrast of the ingredients. Overall, the flavours were well-balanced and delicious.

While there’s room for improvement for the drinks, the standard of food is above average, and I would definitely come back to try other fares in the menu. At a slightly steeper price, this place is good for a hangout, a business meeting or to work remotely from. Not forgetting that there are power sockets to charge your electronic devices, so you don’t have to worry about your devices running out of battery. It’s a perfect hideout spot for when you want to concentrate.

And… that’s all for the review today. Till next time lovelies!
